Outrageous: Stabenow's Pals Make Millions

Democrat leader reaped $1.1 million from sale of land he didn't own

WASHINGTON — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years, property deeds show.

Did Senator Debbie Stabenow get any "special" deal like this?

She is part of Reid's "team"...she travels around the country with him and "raises money" from all of the same "friends"???

Concrete results??

An Update from the Bouchard Campaign:

Today’s MIRS story on a new poll has this curious nugget from a "WashingtonSpeaker" (spokesperson) on the Stabenow campaign:

"Stabenow remains focused on providing concrete results for Michigan."

Someone should clue in Stabenow’s WashingtonSpeaker that savvy-MIRS readers and Michigan voters know that when a campaign uses aggressive  adjectives like "concrete," it actually reveals that they are trying to pushback on something much deeper.

Perhaps it's the fact that when it comes to Stabenow's "results," the facts show that in the 9 1/2 years that she has been in Washington, she has passed only one bill from start to finish and that was to rename a federal building, not create jobs. Or maybe it was the study released this year by a non-partisan group ranking Stabenow 95th out of 99 Senators.

(See why Stabenow would not be named Michigan's MVP here: http://mikeformichigan.com/2/?p=233)

Or perhaps it's the fact that a new poll shows Stabenow’s support eroding 6 points after outspending her opponent nearly 4:1?

EPIC/MRA pollster Ed Sarpolus said this on the latest poll:

"[Stabenow's] job favorability rating is at 42 approve, 42 disapprove. This reflects her connection with Washington, D.C. in general. But you can see why the Republicans have come in with an extra $2 million for Bouchard, just to see if he can move some numbers. Basically, a key fact this poll shows is that people still don't know who Mike Bouchard is." (“Post Debate Poll: Granholm up 46-40,” MIRS, http://mirsnews.com/capsule.php#9402 (subscription), 10/5/2006)

One thing's for sure… 32 days to go… We're positive that the voters will have a chace to find out about Mike Bouchard's clear record of results and his plan to Renew Michigan's Economy.

Bouchard hits the Streets...Touts Experience

Bouchard boasts experience

Gary Heinlein / The Detroit News

Mike Bouchard has hustled votes from the driver's seat of a U-Haul truck and sent a supporter in a chicken costume to the campaign office of Debbie Stabenow, the incumbent U.S. senator he wants to replace.

"He was one of the most effective state senators I've ever worked with, and I'd say that even if he wasn't in my party," said former Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus.

To get a fix on Bouchard's politics, think law-and-order, conservative, business-oriented, mainstream Republican.

RightRoots backs Bouchard for Senate

Human Events "Right Angle" posted a blog on the Bouchard race.  They give a great perspective of the race and then send folks over the "RightRoots".  A great concept worth checking out:

http://www.humanevents.com/rightangle/index.php?id=16092&title=mi_sen_rightroots_spotlight_on_mike_bouc

RightRoots describes Bouchard as:

Mike Bouchard: Michigan
Mike Bouchard is a Michigan Sheriff who started to become competitive with incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow after he completed a long, tough primary race. If Bouchard gets the money he needs to run ads, he can beat Debbie Stabenow and we can replace a liberal Democrat with a conservative Republican who is tough on crime, terrorism, illegal immigration, and pork.

U.S. Senate candidates file...Republicans Ready!

Our Republican candidates for U.S. Senate filed their quarterly reports yesterday.  As we go into the final weeks of our primary, Debbie Stabenow continues to bank funds for her re-election bid.  But with her “dangerously incompetent” record, there’s not enough money around to make a case why the people of Michigan should re-elect her.

Below are this quarters results:

Bouchard 2nd Quarter

$602,049.97      raised
$526,310.65      spent
$1,088,971.50    cash on hand

Butler 2nd quarter

$395,000           raised
$488,000           spent
$650,000           cash on hand

Stabenow hit from both sides on aliens

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20060604-105006-8390r.htm

By Donald Lambro

Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow is under attack in Michigan for straddling the fence on the immigration bill, attempting to please both sides of an issue that has deeply divided her political base.

Mrs. Stabenow, who is seeking re-election to a second term this year, has come under fire from Republican officials and a major state newspaper for opposing key amendments that would crack down on the hiring of illegal aliens.

Both she and her fellow Democratic Sen. Carl Levin during last month's Senate debate "voted in favor of illegality, in favor of border insecurity," the Lansing State Journal editorialized last week.

Mrs. Stabenow vowed at the beginning of that debate "to vote against any immigration bill that puts Michigan jobs at risk," and in the end she voted "no" on final passage. But now she is being criticized at home and by Republican campaign officials for helping to kill several amendments to the bill that proponents said would reduce illegal-immigrant employment.

"Does voting against requiring employers to verify illegal immigrants help workers?" the National Republican Senatorial Committee asked in a recent broadside against the senator.

The NRSC pointed out that she voted for an amendment offered by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, which said that "guest workers would not need an employer to attest forthcoming employment." His amendment passed 56-43.

The NRSC said she also voted against an amendment that would limit the total number of aliens given green cards to 650,000 per year, including their spouses and children. She also voted to allow illegals to receive Social Security benefits, but against mandating that guest workers with expired visas must leave the country.

"Stabenow wants to have it both ways, but a simple look at her own immigration votes shows that what she says doesn't match up with how she voted," said NRSC spokesman Brian Walton.

In response to the Lansing State Journal attack, Mrs. Stabenow said that the editorial "grossly misrepresented my position on immigration reform," though she did not address the amendment votes that have drawn criticism.

"I sponsored an amendment that would have stripped this guest-worker program from the final bill because it is unfair to Michigan workers, and I will continue to fight its inclusion in any final immigration-reform package," she said in a letter published by the Journal.

While Mrs. Stabenow's votes on the bill appeared contradictory to some, Michigan Democrats said she was striking a balancing act on the measure by casting votes that would appeal to her state's Hispanics, but in the end voting against the entire bill, which much of her party's blue-collar constituencies oppose.

"Some of her votes were cast to appeal to Hispanics and Latin Americans in her base and others to labor unions and big corporations that give her money. This is a balancing act to make all groups happy," said Michigan Democratic pollster Ed Sarpolus of EPIC/MRA.

"She learned from the defeat of former Senator Spence Abraham in 2000 when labor ran all those FAIR campaign ads against him on immigration," Mr. Sarpolus said.

Mr. Abraham, the Republican whom Mrs. Stabenow narrowly defeated, had helped to pass a major increase in H1-B immigration visas for high-tech workers. He then ran into a wave of opposition when the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) accused him of giving Michigan jobs to immigrants.

"It's an issue that could be used in the fall campaign. It's one of those issues you can't win on, but that you can lose on," Mr. Sarpolus said.

Two Qualified to Seek Republican Nomination

After numerous press calls this afternoon, I called Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and confirmed that the Zandstra campaign had NOT filed enough qualified signatures to qualify for the August primary ballot.  At approximately 3:30pm today, an additional third party complaint was filed that challenged the validity of over 3,000 signatures on the nominating petition claiming they were not those of registered voters.

I issued the following statement:

Anuzis Statement on Zandstra Petitions
Lansing, MI – Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saulius “Saul” Anuzis issued the following statement regarding the possibility that Jerry Zandstra may not have enough valid signatures to be on the ballot:

“The law on this matter is clear: A candidate for US Senate must submit between a minimum of 15,000 and maximum of 30,000 valid registered voter signatures. Two candidates - Mike Bouchard and Keith Butler - each submitted the maximum number, showing the breadth of support and depth of organization necessary to wage viable statewide campaigns. It appears that one candidate - Jerry Zandstra - did not submit enough valid signatures to meet that minimum requirement and will not appear on the ballot.

“I am completely satisfied with the two remaining candidates and confident that either Keith Butler or Mike Bouchard will defeat Debbie Stabenow in November.”

NY Times...should Democrats Win?

The Nation

Hey Democrats, Why Win?

DEMOCRATS are all but breaking out the Champagne. Republicans are divided and disheartened; President Bush's poll numbers seem to be in free fall. Many Democrats are talking not only about victory in November but about what they will do once Congress is in their hands.

Such talk may well be premature. Election Day is six months away, and the party has lost many a winning hand. But here is a slightly heretical question, being asked only partly in jest right now: Is it really in the best interest of the Democratic Party to win control of the House and Senate in November? Might the party's long-term fortunes actually be helped by falling short?

Stabenow kills Medical Liability Reform

Senator Debbie Stabenow voted against “cloture” on the Medical Liability Reform bill in the Senate today.  With this vote, Senator Stabenow has obstructed meaningful medical liability reform that would have ensured access to quality, affordable health care.

Frivolous lawsuits and excessive payouts force doctors out of business, drive up medical costs and ultimately jeopardize the health of  everyone in Michgan.

It’s unfortunate that Stabenow has chosen to help line the pockets of trial lawyers rather than to help meet the health care needs of this nation.

Michigan deserves better.

Stabenow: one of the worst

Stabenow rated among lowest of all U.S. Senators

Stabenow received a 6% taxpayer rating

Washington, D.C. – Debbie Stabenow is among the worst abusers of taxpayer money, according to the non-partisan National Taxpayers Union (NTU).  NTU just released their ratings for the 109th Congress for the first session of 2005. Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow received a rating of 6% from the NTU. Stabenow is rated worse than the most notoriously liberal Senators, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry.  Only 4 U.S. Senators ranked worse than Debbie Stabenow.

“The latest NTU ratings demonstrate that Stabenow is out of touch with voters,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman, Saulius “Saul” Anuzis. “It is time that Michigan has a responsible Senator in office, someone that represents the interests of its citizens, not a tax and spend Democrat who panders to the democratic cause rather than serving her constituency.”

The NTU base their ratings on every vote that has any affect on taxes, spending, debt, and regulatory burdens on taxpayers. The NTU use the fairest possible method when calculating their ratings, without any threat of politicization. According to the NTU their “only constituency is the overburdened American taxpayer.”

Stabenow's friend Kennedy...

We are all Marxists now

By Dave Cloud

Apr 28, 2006

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and them misapplying the wrong remedies.” --Groucho Marx

Who knew that Ted Kennedy was an Economics genius? Kennedy’s never-ending campaign for an increase in the minimum wage—the law that Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman has called “one of the most anti-black laws on the statute books”—certainly never betrayed his hidden expertise. But after Sunday’s edition of Meet The Press, the secret is out.
