President Ford

Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saulius "Saul" Anuzis issued the following statement in response to the sad news of the passing of former President Gerald Ford:

"Today, Michigan and the nation are in mourning at the loss of one of our great citizens.  President Gerald Ford served our country with great distinction, and as the only President from Michigan, he has made our state tremendously proud.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.  We look not to mourn the death of this great man for too long, but to celebrate and reflect upon his life and works.  He will be missed."

Notes from Jane

President Gerald Ford Will Be Missed

The Associated Press just called to ask for my statement re: President Ford's death.  Here is what I gave them:

"President Ford was a great man, a great leader and perhaps Michigan's greatest son.  He served his country with distinction for his entire adult life.  He will be remembered as a President who kept America together during one of its greatest crises and he and his wife, Betty, have demonstrated great courage and the highest values throughout their lives.  He will be missed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Indeed, those of us active in the Republican Party in Michigan have a special spot in our hearts for President Ford.  Let's all keep the Ford family in our prayers and help America honor this great man in the days ahead.

Ten Principles of Conservatism

From our friends at Human Events:

Ten Principles of Conservatism

by Terence P. Jeffrey
Posted Dec 20, 2006

As a very political year approaches an end, and a new presidential election cycle looms, it’s a good time for conservatives to step back from partisan politics and reflect on their cause.

What do conservatives believe? Here are 10 principles worth pondering.

1. God’s Law Governs Nations as Well as Men.

The Ten Commandments should not only be enshrined in our courthouses, they should be engraved in our hearts and minds as guides to all behavior, public and private. As the Founders acknowledged in the Declaration of Independence, laws and policies that violate the natural law are abuses of government power that must be resisted and reversed.

2. Life Is the First God-Given Right

It’s always wrong to deliberately take an innocent human life. When this principle is abridged, violence escalates. Thus we have aborted 47 million unborn babies in the past three decades, begun to accept euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide, and stand at the threshold of cloning human beings for the specific purpose of killing them.

3. Marriage and Family Come Before the State and Deserve Its Protection

The marriage of one man and one woman is the natural foundation of all human society, and the means by which children ought to be brought into the world and taught the basic values of our civilization. Government has a duty to recognize and protect the family and must not grant alternative relationships the same status and privileges.

4. Freedom of Conscience is the Soul of Liberty

Understanding that freedom of conscience is at the heart of liberty, the Framers protected freedom of religion and assembly in the 1st Amendment. Movements to force the Boy Scouts to accept homosexual scout masters, or to compel religious individuals or organizations to distribute birth control or abortion drugs against their beliefs, directly attack these freedoms.

5. Private Property is the Servant of Freedom

The more that individuals, families and businesses can acquire and control the goods necessary to sustain and advance themselves, the more autonomy they will have from the state and others who may wish to unjustly restrict their freedom. The free and responsible use of private property tends to create greater wealth and greater freedom for greater numbers of people.

6. Government Dependency is the Seed of Tyranny

The more that individuals, families and businesses are dependent on the state for the goods necessary to sustain and advance themselves, the less autonomy they will have from the state and others who may wish to unjustly restrict their freedom. This is why expanding the welfare state is bad, and Social Security personal retirement accounts, Health Savings Accounts and school choice are good.

7. The Constitution Means What It Says

Believing in the God-given rights of man and understanding the imperfect nature of human beings, the Framers crafted a Constitution designed to protect the former from the latter. Many of the problems in U.S. government would be resolved if the President, Congress and Courts limited themselves and each other to the authority the Constitution actually grants them.

8. Taxes Are Justified Only to Fund Necessary Government Spending

A massive and complex tax code has become a powerful weapon politicians can use to pressure citizens to behave as the politicians, or the interest groups that support the politicians, wish. The correct function of taxation is to equitably collect only that revenue needed to fund the legitimate activities of a constitutionally limited government.

9. National Defense Is Just That

The first duty of the federal government is to defend the American people against foreign enemies. While advancing freedom in the world is good in itself—and, where it prudently can be done, would advance the interests of the United States--ultimately, the mandate for our national leaders is to use whatever moral means they can to carve out that path in our relations with foreign powers that is most likely to lead to enhanced security, prosperity and freedom for this nation.

10. We Should Strive to Give Our Children a Better Country

America is more than just an expanse of territory or a set of laws. It is a culture, whose art, architecture, journalism, music, movies, television, schools and universities, should reflect and reinforce the traditional values that made this country great. We owe this to our children, who will build the America of tomorrow on the foundation of the America we teach them to love today.

Impeachment -- Recall???

Q: If you have a Constitutional requirement to balance the budget...then don't...then hide it...is that cause for impeachment or recall???

Q: If you win an election and then ask Corporations for MILLIONS of dollars to throw "innaugural parties" statewide...while we have the highest unemployment in the country...thousands are being laid off...is that cause for impeachment or recall???

Q:  If you raise MILLIONS of dollars into a super secret slush fund called Partnership for Progress...to help you "govern"....and then that slush fund disappears...is that cause for impeachment or recall???

...or is all of this just politics as usual???

Did governor hide budget overruns to aid campaign?

The Detroit News

GOP state lawmakers suspect politics in the Granholm administration's failure to inform them of departmental overspending until after this year's election. They're right to do so.

The departments of Human Services, Corrections and state police all spent more money -- adding up to more than $50 million -- than they were allotted in the 2005-06 budget year, which ended in September.

Only in late November were lawmakers informed of the overspending as the departments sought additional appropriations to cover their expenses. Yet at a legislative hearing this week, according to Rep. Scott Hummel, R-DeWitt, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, representatives from two of the departments, Corrections and the State Police, said they knew about the spending overruns in October.

Asked if the failure to notify the Legislature of the spending overruns had anything to do with the gubernatorial campaign, Hummel answered, "it appears that way to me."

"What bothers me," he continued, "is that we're the elected representatives of the people and it's our job to deal with these issues. Yet they (the departments) chose to bypass us."

In noting that decision, a memorandum from the House Fiscal Agency said requirements in the state Management and Budget Act as well as the state Constitution prohibit such spending outside of current appropriations.

The fiscal agency memo said lawmakers should ask the administration why the chairs of both the House and Senate appropriations committees weren't immediately notified of the spending overruns.

State Budget Director Mary Lannoye, in Hummel's phrase, "took a bullet" in accepting the blame at this week's hearing for what a departmental spokesman called "the situation" regarding the overruns. The spokesman, when asked if there was a political motive in delaying notification of lawmakers, said "absolutely not."

He added that Lannoye wanted to get a full handle on the figures and present an accurate picture to lawmakers.

But the House Fiscal Agency noted a problem with one argument cited by Lannoye.

She said her office didn't know the extent of the problem until the books on the fiscal year were nearly closed.

"If that excuse were valid, no problem would need to be reported before book closing and -- for all practical purposes, the Legislature's control over the budget would become null and void," the House agency said.

Mary Lannoye is a more capable budgeteer than this whole situation suggests. She has served as budget director for John Engler as well as Jennifer Granholm.

She is so highly regarded by the governor that she is being named as her chief of staff.

Maybe the administration in Lansing is telling the truth about the late reporting of the budget overruns.

But given the governor's emphasis on producing balanced budgets during her re-election campaign, there is plenty of reason to suspect pressure may have been applied to keep the overruns quiet -- which means a GOP-controlled state Senate will have to keep a very sharp eye on future numbers crunching in Lansing.

GOP Bloggers Poll...Have some Fun

Articles of Interest 12-11-06

694 Days until election day.

Democrats re-elected Congressman “Dollar Bill” Jefferson from New Orleans and now Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi is being “pressured” to start impeachment procedures against President Bush.

The American people sent Congress and the President a message…based on the Democrats campaign to “be different”…the clean up Washington…NOT to gridlock Congress by starting impeachment procedures…to find real solutions in Iraq and the Middle East and now the Democrats true colors are coming out.

Did the Democrats lie AGAIN…just to get elected???

Congressman William Jefferson (D – New Orleans) …also known as “Dollar Bill” Jefferson was video taped taking $100,000 bribe and then “stored” the marked bills in a freezer in his office.  Yes, he is under “investigation”, but apparently videotape evidence and cash on hand isn’t enough to blunt the Democrat’s “culture of corruption”.

Maybe the Democrats are sending the American voters a message…trick or treat?  Wait it’s not Halloween but rather Christmas…the Grinch that lied about…?

Congresswoman Pelosi who went on national television telling the American people that impeachment is “off the table”, was implying that she could control the more “radical” elements of the Democrat caucus, who now seems to be “under pressure” to act.

What kind of other “pressures” will she face…tax hikes…nationalize health care…gay rights agenda…cut & run strategy on the war on terror…more big brother regulation.

Wow…are we going to be in position to say “you got what you asked for”?  Here in Michigan, Governor Granholm is already calling for tax hikes…Speaker-elect Pelosi is being pressured (set-up) for a radical leftist agenda and then the Democrats embracing the “culture of corruption” that made many in America completely disgusted.

Are the “real” Democrats standing up???
