NAACP dinner a huge success...Historical Facts

As we return from this evenings NAACP dinner it worth reflecting on some of the historical facts about the Republican party.  Here is a link to an good aricles as well as some quotes:

http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/larryelder/2005/11/17/175888.html

"How many blacks know that following the Civil War, 23 blacks -- 13 of them ex-slaves -- were elected to Congress, all as Republicans? The first black Democrat was not elected to Congress until 1935, from the state of Illinois. The first black congressional Democrat from a Southern state was not elected until 1973."

"How many blacks know that blacks founded the Texas Republican Party? On July 4, 1867, in Houston, Texas, 150 blacks and 20 whites formed the party. No, not the Black Texas Republican Party, they founded the Texas Republican Party. Blacks across Southern states also founded the Republican parties in their states."

"Emancipation? Republican President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. In 1865, the 13th Amendment emancipating the slaves was passed with 100 percent of Republicans (88 of 88 in the House, 30 of 30 in the Senate) voting for it. Only 23 percent of Democrats (16 of 66 in the House, 3 of 8 in the Senate) voted for it. "

"Civil rights in the '60s? Only 64 percent of Democrats in Congress voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act (153 for, 91 against in the House; and 46 for, 21 against in the Senate). But 80 percent of Republicans (136 for, 35 against in the House; and 27 for, 6 against in the Senate) voted for the 1964 Act."

Articles of Interest 4-30-06

This morning we did the Chuck Stokes show on Detroit TV.  The Dem chair Mark Brewer and I debated the issues of the day and the political lay of the land.  Facts vs. political rhetoric makes our side’s arguments a whole lot easier.  Once again, from the Democrats perspective it’s all the President’s fault, or China, Gov. Engler, competition….everybody else except taking some responsibility to help to things around.

Tonight many of us will be attending the annual NAACP dinner in Detroit.  We continued our African American outreach programs….as more and more community activists agree that it’s time for a change.  The Democrats for DeVos are growing daily, spontaneously and giving us an opportunity to make our argument of why everyone should consider voting Republican.

One of the best conversations I had last week was with a young African American who said the best argument I made at our get together was that the issues are NO different than those that should be made to any other voter, except “we just happen to be black”.  I couldn’t agree more.  To me outreach means going after each and every voter, dispelling the myths of the past and sharing our hope for a better Michigan and America.

Last night I attended a wedding where I met a young woman who was a Democrat State Representative from the Chicago area who happen to be Hispanic.  We had a great conversation and I made the argument why it’s never to late to be “saved”. Her big push was that “we” the Republicans should do more to involve more Hispanics in the party…again, couldn’t agree with her more.  She opposed “illegal immigration”, she wasn’t sure “amnesty” was a good idea and was very much an entrepreneur.  I’m not sure I convinced her, but she sure sounded like a Republican….more hope!

A number of folks received “old” Articles of Interest yesterday….I think our server may have resent some bounced back emails….sorry for the inconvenience.

Stabenow's friend Kennedy...

We are all Marxists now

By Dave Cloud

Apr 28, 2006

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and them misapplying the wrong remedies.” --Groucho Marx

Who knew that Ted Kennedy was an Economics genius? Kennedy’s never-ending campaign for an increase in the minimum wage—the law that Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman has called “one of the most anti-black laws on the statute books”—certainly never betrayed his hidden expertise. But after Sunday’s edition of Meet The Press, the secret is out.

Governor Granholm was forced to make her first public appearance with Dick DeVos last night after dogging efforts to set up a series of debates before the people of Michigan.  Most would agree no one hit any home runs, but neither "struck out".

DeVos and Granholm’s first public forum at the Freedom Institute’s annual Freedom Weekend conference at Cobo gave many non traditional Republican voters an opportunity to see why so many are joining “Democrats for DeVos”.  NAACP’s President, Rev. Wendell Anthony, organized the event.

As the Detroit Free Press pointed out in their editorial, DeVos’ platform boiled down to the theme of “hope”.  And with Michigan fighting for survival in this single state recession…we need leadership with the experience to lead and make tough decisions.

http://migop.blogs.com/blog/2006/04/devos_faces_off.html

Governor George Pataki of New York launched his PAC’s web page yesterday.  “Freedom PAC”  is a great place to go to get a feel for where the Governor stands on various issues and what kind of possible Presidential candidate he might make.  The Governor visited with us during the Super Bowl and is scheduled to be back in Michigan several times of the next few months…make sure you make a point of getting to meet him.  His web page is at:

http://www.freedompac.com/

We had a great staff retreat yesterday.  We pulled our whole team together at the headquarters and prepared for what was coming up in the months ahead.  Each department briefed the rest of team on what they do.  We had some of the senior staff and others with more extensive campaign experience share some of their “war stories” with the group to better prepare them for some of the challenges ahead.  Our goal was to make sure our team had a better understanding of what an important part each and everyone of them is of our team and come up with some ideas and ways we can continue to improve on the things that we do.

You can be proud of the team at the Michigan Republicans….we’re ready to take on the challenges ahead a help lead us to victory in November!!!

Granholm, DeVos face off at Freedom Weekend event

Both candidates face pointed questions during town hall meeting

DETROIT -- Gubernatorial rivals Jennifer Granholm and Dick DeVos sized each other up and tried out some campaign rhetoric Friday during a conference at Cobo Center.

Several hundred people listened with a mix of skepticism and approval as the Democratic governor and Republican businessman answered questions for 90 minutes

The DeVos for Governor campaign rolled out their newest ad called “Complex”.  This ad recaps much of the message viewers have seen in the first few ads both visually as well as with the audio.  It does however introduce Dick’s leadership in calling for the elimination of Michigan’s job-killing SBT (Single Business Tax).

The Granholm Jobs Clock continued to get attention nation wide as various news outlets, blogs and internet sites carried stories about the Jobs Clock following Jennifer Granholm to Washington D.C.  Fo another story go to:

Yesterday we had our weekly radio debate with Dem chair Mark Brewer.  After the “Big Show” we both showed up at Chuck Stoke’s show on Detroit TV 7 to tape Sunday’s show.  Mr. Brewer did all he could to divert attention for the job losses in Michigan and kept bringing up China…you know the place where he and the party gets their radios, tape decks, TV and clothes.  Rather than “disclosure” these guys are focusing on “distraction”.  Pssst….it aint going to work!

Campaign finance reports for all federal candidates and PACs have been filed.  Analysis and dissection of these reports are taking place.  There are some interesting articles written about the various reports…and the leadership PACs of the Presidential aspirants are very interesting.

Leadership PACs: The 2008 Republicans

On Wednesday we dissected the spending habits of the leadership political action committees associated with the 2008 Democratic presidential candidates. Today we turn our attention to the Republicans.

Before jumping into a candidate by candidate analysis, it's important to note that none of the Republican leadership PACs rival their Democratic counterparts in terms of depth of organization. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's HILL PAC employs 26 staffers, ex-Virginia Gov. Mark Warner's Forward Together PAC has 23. No GOP leadership PAC has even 10 employees. Sen. Bill Frist's Volunteer PAC leads the way with eight staffers, while Arizona Sen. John McCain's Straight Talk America comes in second with six salaried employees. Several top tier candidates like Virginia Sen. George Allen and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have no employees or just a few staffers on payroll.

Bill Clinton’s old buddy Vernon Jordan hosted a fundraiser for Governor Jennifer Ganholm in D.C. last night.  We understand why the Governor had to go out of state to find folks willing to support her, primarily those who didn’t know what kind of job she had done as Governor….we decided to organize a road trip and have the the Granholm Jobs Clock ticking away at the front door of the event.

Washington’s liberal elites came to Mr. Jordan’s house and notice the “jobs clock” ticking away as Michigan families lost one job for every twenty minutes this Governor remains in office.  Our boys handed out “pink slips” with the latest employment statistics for Michigan and made it clear….while 49 other states had gained over 5.1 million jobs since the summer of 2003….Michigan was the ONLY state in the country to lose jobs over the last three years.

Worst yet, Michigan was the only state in the country to lose jobs last year that wasn’t hit by a hurricane!  Michigan deserves better.

Governor Granholm likes to say she will go anywhere and talk to anyone about bringing jobs to Michigan….we’ll, save the taxpayers some money.  Whatever the “plan” is your “working” - isn’t….we will go anywhere and show everybody that Michigan continues to lose one job for every twenty minutes your in office.  We’re can do better!!!

Pizza & Politics in Detroit was a great success last night.  Party acitivist from across Detroit and the surrounding area came out to talk politics, meet and greet candidates and have some pretty good munchies.

We also had a few “Democrats for DeVos” show up.  One guy I talked to wasn’t ready to become a Republican yet….but said he was sure ready to vote for Dick DeVos.  Join the crowd…it seems to be growing day by day.

Earlier in the evening Oakland County hosted their annual “Salute to Justice” event.  A record breaking crowd showed up to hear L. Brooks Patterson “get the event going”.  Oakland County Republicans honored some of Michigans’ finest jurist, shared some hospitality and got a chance to talk a little politics.  You want to talk about a great crop of possible federal judges….well, only if we could get Levin and Stabenow to stop obstructing the process???  Maybe a Republican U.S. Senator would help…yeh!!!

Newt on Immigration

Ending the Dishonesty: The Way Forward on Border Control and Patriotic Immigration
Working Paper

April 26 2006
Newt Gingrich

BACKGROUND

There has been a breakdown of will on the part of America’s leaders to control our borders and ensure that new immigrants learn to be American.

The thousands of people we now see marching in the streets of U.S. cities over immigration policy is the product of two decades of a fundamentally dishonest immigration system.

For two decades, the U.S. government has failed to control the borders while many U.S. businesses have profited by breaking the law. In turn, the U.S. government failure to enforce the immigration laws has encouraged outright defiance of federal authority by certain state and local jurisdictions. Adding insult to this state of affairs is an immigration bureaucracy that has been slow, cumbersome, rude, heartless, and incompetent in the discharge of its duties.

This dishonest system has lured millions to enter our country illegally and to obtain work here illegally.
As the United States acts to transform our immigration system from a dishonest to an honest one, it is understandable that those living and working here illegally – especially those who have lived and worked here illegally for a long period of time -- are anxious and fearful about the future. While our two decade long failure does not mean that we are required to maintain a dishonest system, it does mean that we must have a humanitarian period of transition as we replace an illegal pattern of immigration with a legal one.

Jobs Clock Goes to D.C.!!

Granholm Job Loss Clock crosses state lines

Clock will be in WaJobs_clock_at_vernons_house_in_dc_001_4_1shington for Governor’s fundraiser

Washington D.C. – As Michigan continues to lose jobs and Michigan families are forced to leave the state in search of other opportunities, the Granholm Job Loss Clock too left the state today, traveling to Washington D.C.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there in person for the Governor’s event,” MRP Chairman Saulius “Saul” Anuzis said, “but I was certainly there in spirit via the jobs clock.  The Michigan Republicans will go anywhere and do anything to make sure that people know that Michigan is losing one job every 20 minutes this governor is in office.”

The Governor is attending a fundraiser in her honor at Vernon Jordan’s home in Washington D.C. Jordan is a well-known Democratic fundraiser and a close friend of former President Bill Clinton.

“This Governor clearly will go anywhere and do anything…to try to raise campaign cash,” Anuzis said.  “I hope the jobs clock sitting outside the fundraiser serves as a reminder to the Governor that in the 2 hours she spends hobnobbing with fellow Democrats, Michigan will lose another 6 jobs.”

4 Democrats sentenced to jail for election day shenanagans

4 sentenced to jail for tire slashings

Sowande Omokundey Iright) hugs his mother, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore in front of another defendant, Lewis Caldwell. Photo/Gary PorterA judge today ignored a plea deal calling for probation and sentenced four Democratic campaign workers to jail terms for their roles in the infamous Election Day 2004 tire slashing caper.

The four - including the sons of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) and former Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt - pleaded no contest to misdemeanors while an apparently deadlocked jury stalled over felony counts at the end of a January trial that received national coverage.

A fifth Kerry-Edwards staffer accused of crippling Republican vans, Justin Howell, turned down the last-minute deal and was acquitted by the jury.

Michael Pratt was sentenced to six months in jail, and Sowande Omokunde, Moore's son, got four months in jail. Lavelle Mohammad was sentenced to five months in jail, and Lewis Caldwell received a six-month jail sentence.

Each was fined $1,000. The defendants all had previously paid a collective restitution of $5,320, as part of the plea bargain.

They had been charged with damaging 40 tires on 25 rented vans parked outside Republican Party offices on W. Capitol Drive, hours before the vans were going to be used for electioneering. The repair costs easily exceeded the felony threshold of $2,500, yet there was little evidence about what each man had allegedly done.

Prosecutors built most of their case on testimony from out-of-state Democratic operatives who had come to work on the Wisconsin campaign alongside the defendants. The witnesses said the local men boasted about their crippling attack on the Republican vehicles.

Defense attorneys tried to characterize the party professionals as liars who set up the defendants - loosely
tied to the scene by cell-phone records and the hazy memory of a security guard - as fall guys for the crime.

Tony Snow...what others are saying

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT PRESIDENT BUSH'S NEW PRESS SECRETARY

Praise For Tony Snow:

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL): "The President's very lucky to have a man of Tony Snow's caliber take this job on. I think he's going to do an excellent job at maybe one of the toughest press jobs in America. I am sure that he's up to it based on his experience." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Sen. George Allen (R-VA): "I think [Tony Snow is] a great choice. I like Tony a lot. The best thing that Tony's going to do is bring the pulse of the American people into the White House in those deliberations... Great choice by the President. And I think it will be good for the American people, too, to have one of their advocates clearly in the White House who is on the pulse of the people in the real world." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Former Clinton White House Special Counsel Lanny Davis: "[H]e is a man of integrity and he's a man of fairness and he's a man of substance and I emphasize substance because it's my perception that Tony will have a policy role in discussing facts with the President rather than simply being a conduit. ... I think he will have a great deal of credibility on behalf of President Bush." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol: "It will be good to have a fair and balanced press secretary. An outsider with a somewhat happy-go-lucky attitude could help externally, but also internally ..." (Howard Kurtz and Fred Barbash, "Tony Snow Becomes White House Press Secretary," The Washington Post, 4/26/06)

Former White House Aide David Gergen: "Tony Snow is a good man and a good choice." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

CNN's Soledad O'Brien: "[Tony Snow] knows how to do TV, and that may be an important plus ..." (CNN's "American Morning," 4/26/06)

Former Texas Democrat Congressman Martin Frost: "[I] think Tony's a straight shooter ...  I think Tony obviously has credibility. ... [H]e's somebody that the press respects. ... I think he was a good choice and I think it's good for the President to put somebody out like Tony who has credibility and let's hope that now that things, people can work together in Washington a little bit more." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Republican Strategist Ed Rogers: "He has great familiarity with most of the White House press corps, anyway. Great familiarity with a lot of the people that he will be working with in the White House. So I think he will come in with the wind at his back and have a lot of goodwill both with the public, both with the media, and inside the White House, so I think it's, I think it's great." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

NBC's David Gregory: "[Tony Snow] certainly has a good reputation. And yes, look, I think, for people like me in the job that we're doing, somebody like a Tony Snow, who has some sense of what our needs are, where we're coming from, can be very helpful." (MSNBC's "Scarborough Country," 4/25/06)

CNN's Elaine Quijano: "[W]hat this demonstrates, really, is the desire by this administration to reach out very actively to the media." (CNN's "American Morning," 4/26/06)

Democrat Strategist Steve McMahon: "[H]e's a principled, pragmatic conservative ..." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

MSNBC's Tucker Carlson: "[F]or what it's worth, [Tony Snow is] a very good guy. ... [c]ongratulations to Tony Snow. He'll be a pleasure to watch. I look forward to it." (MSNBC's "The Situation," 4/25/06)

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

In the April 25, 2006 edition of Gongwer, readers discovered that Granholm isn't terribly worried about high gas prices, since she isn't paying for the gas--YOU are!:

"SHORT TRIPS:  Gas prices are rising again, but they have apparently not yet reached a point where they outweigh the governor’s security measures.

After speaking at a rally Tuesday on the east steps of the Capitol, Governor Jennifer Granholm’s next stop was the Boji Tower, about half a block away.  But the journey actually involved walking half a block the other direction and then driving to her destination.

Press secretary Liz Boyd said the decision for the short hop was likely security-related.  “Those decisions are always made by State Police and they always made based on the governor’s security,” she said."

Yesterday we completed our state wide tour of Wayne State Univesity, Michigan State University and Grand Valley University discussing how Governor Jennifer Granholm’s policies are leading to the costliest outsources of them all….our college educated children and grandchildren.

According to a Michigan State University Recruiting Trends study:

-nationwide, job providers will are planning on hiring 5% more graduate;

-Michigan employers are planning on hiring 43% less graduates;

-nationally, overall hiring will increase 9%…but not in Michigan;

-64% of all the United Van Line moves in 2005 were one way tickets out;

-at the same time Michigan ranked the 3rd in the nation for tuirion increases in 2005.

Michigan needs new leadership….and it needs it now!

Governor Granholm plays dangerous politics with “big oil” profits.  We are all concerned about the high price of gas at this time, but it’s a global problem and there are some practical solutions.  But if Granholm plays the “typical left” card by calling for some boycotts, or dis-investiture or the capping profits….you may pay the price.  One of the largest holding in most pension funds are oil & gas stocks.  It’s the largest holding in both the state’s biggest pension funds.  Granholm political posturing can have real consequences.  For several articles of the “Michigan effect” go to:

Governor Jennifer Granholm travelled to Washington D.C. today to raise money for her re-election campaign.  Ameirca’s most out of touch liberals are serving on her host committee.  Tonight, she will be at Vernon Jordan’s home in D.C.,   I wonder if they realize that Michigan has been loosing ONE job for every TWENTY minutes Granholm has been in office.  Have they seen the jobs clock yet?

Granholm plays politics with your pension

Online petition drive would cheat state retirees

Gov. Jennifer Granholm's grandstanding to get oil company profits capped is not only misguided and misinformed, it's bad for Michigan -- particularly the state's retirees...

President Bush's Plan - Gas Prices...

President Bush's Four-Part Plan To Confront High Gasoline Prices

Today, President Bush Discussed The Four Parts Of His Practical Plan To Confront High Gas Prices.  The President's plan includes making sure consumers and taxpayers are treated fairly, promoting greater fuel efficiency, boosting our oil and gasoline supplies, and investing aggressively in alternatives to gasoline, so we can eliminate the root cause of high gas prices by diversifying away from oil in the longer term.

America Is Addicted To Oil, And An Increasing Amount Of The Oil We Need Comes From Foreign Countries.  Some of the nations we rely on for oil have unstable governments or agendas hostile to the United States.  These countries know we need their oil, and that reduces our influence.  We must not allow America to be put at risk by the unfriendly leaders of foreign countries.

It Is Important To Understand Why Gas Prices Are High.  The market for oil is global, and America is not the only large consumer.  Countries like China and India are consuming more and more oil, so global demand for oil is rising faster than global supply.  As a result, oil prices are rising around the world, which leads to higher gas prices in America.  America's gasoline demand is projected to increase this summer, and our refining capacity is stretched tight, making it difficult for supply to keep pace with demand.  To compound the problem, we are undergoing a rapid change in our fuel mix – a transition from MTBE to ethanol in certain fuel blends, and that transition is temporarily pushing up gas prices even more.

The President's Four-Part Plan To Confront High Gasoline Prices Includes:

1.  Ensuring That American Consumers Are Treated Fairly At The Gas Pump.

*   Americans Will Not Accept Fraud Or Manipulation Of The Market, And The President Will Not Tolerate It.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating whether the price of gasoline has been unfairly manipulated since last year's hurricanes.  The President is also directing the Department of Justice to work with the FTC and the Department of Energy to conduct inquiries into cheating or illegal manipulation related to current gasoline prices.  The FTC and Attorney General are contacting all 50 state attorneys general to offer technical assistance and to urge them to aggressively investigate illegal price manipulation within their jurisdictions.

*  The President Calls On Congress To Repeal Certain Tax Breaks That Are Unnecessary For Energy Companies.  With oil prices at record levels, energy companies have large cash flows – and energy companies should reinvest their profits into expanding refining capacity, researching alternative energy sources, developing new technologies, and expanding production.  Record oil prices and large cash flows also mean that energy companies do not need unnecessary tax breaks like the "geological and geophysical expenditure" depreciation acceleration provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.  This unnecessary tax break allows energy companies to rapidly depreciate costs related to oil exploration.  The President also calls on Congress to repeal the Energy Policy Act provision subsidizing energy companies’ research into deepwater drilling.  The President is looking forward to Congress taking about $2 billion of these tax breaks out of the budget over a 10-year period of time.

2.  Promoting Greater Fuel Efficiency.

*   The President Calls On Congress To Make All Hybrid And Clean Diesel Vehicles Sold This Year Eligible For Federal Tax Credits.  An immediate way for drivers to get more miles out of each gallon is to choose a highly efficient hybrid or clean diesel vehicle.  Hybrid vehicles run on the combination of a traditional engine and an electric battery.  These twin sources of power allow hybrid cars and trucks to travel about twice as far on a gallon of fuel as gasoline-only vehicles.  Clean diesel vehicles take advantage of advances in diesel technology to run on 30 percent less fuel than gasoline vehicles.  More than 200,000 hybrid and clean diesel vehicles were sold in the United States last year – the highest sales in history.  The Energy Policy Act President Bush signed into law expanded the tax credit for purchasers of hybrid and clean diesel vehicles to as much as $3,400, but these tax credits apply to only a limited number of hybrid and clean diesel vehicles for each manufacturer.

*   A Proven Way To Conserve Gasoline Is To Reform Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards.  The Administration has reformed the way the CAFE program determines standards for light trucks by emphasizing the size of the vehicle.  CAFE standards for light trucks have been increased from 20.7 miles per gallon when the President took office to 24 miles per gallon in 2011.  The President's reforms bring CAFE standards for light trucks to the highest level in the history of the program – and they are helping American drivers save money at the pump.

3.  Boosting Our Supplies Of Crude Oil And Gasoline.

*   The President Supports Halting Deposits To The Strategic Petroleum Reserve For A Short Period Of Time.
The President has directed the Department of Energy to defer filling the Reserve this summer.  Our Strategic Reserve is sufficiently large to guard against any major supply disruption over the next few months.  Deferring deposits until the fall will leave a little more oil on the market – and when supplies are tight, every little bit counts.

*   The President Is Directing EPA Administrator Steve Johnson To Use All His Available Authority To Grant Waivers That Would Relieve Critical Fuel Supply Shortages – As He Did After Last Year's Hurricanes.  Under Federal air quality laws, some areas of the country are required to use a fuel blend called reformulated gasoline.  This year, we are undergoing a rapid transition in the primary ingredient in reformulated gas – from MTBE to ethanol.  State and local officials in the Northeast and in Texas worry that supplies could run low.  To ensure that there are not needless restrictions to get gasoline to the pump, the EPA should be able to meet the request of officials seeking to waive local fuel requirements on a temporary basis.  If Administrator Johnson finds he needs more authority to relieve the problem, the Administration will work with Congress to obtain the authority he needs.

*   The President Is Also Directing Administrator Johnson To Bring Together Governors To Form A New Task Force To Confront The Larger Problem Of Too Many Localized Fuel Blends (Boutique Fuels).  America's uncoordinated and overly complex set of fuel mixes raises the risk of painful local price increases, even during only minor supply disruptions.

*   The President Calls On Congress To Allow Refiners To Make Minor Modifications To Their Refineries Without Having To Endure Years Of Delays In The Approval Process, And The President Also Calls On Congress To Simplify And Speed Up The Permitting Process For Refinery Construction And Expansion.  The President asks Congress to cut through the red tape and guarantee that refinery construction permits will be processed within a single year.  To boost America's gasoline supply on a large scale, we need to expand our oil refining capacity.  There has not been a new refinery built in America in 30 years.  As a result, America now imports about a million barrels of gasoline every day – that means that about one of every ten gallons of gas Americans get at the pump is refined in a foreign country.  Part of the reason for this is that the refinery permitting process in the United States is extremely complicated.

*  Congress Needs To Send The President A Bill This Year Authorizing Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) Exploration.  America has the ability to explore for oil in environmentally responsible ways, and we should make use of the ability.  The Administration has taken steps to increase access to offshore oil, and Congress should allow environmentally sensitive oil exploration in ANWR.

4.  Investing In Alternatives To Oil, So That We Can Dramatically Reduce Our Demand For Gasoline.

*  The President Calls On Congress To Support His Advanced Energy Initiative (AEI).  The AEI is focused on three of the most promising ways to reduce gas consumption: increasing our use of ethanol, improving hybrid vehicles, and developing hydrogen technology.  The AEI will strengthen our economy, our energy supply, and our national security.

*  Renewable Fuels Producers Are Using One Of The World's Oldest Industries – Agriculture – To Power Some Of The World's Newest Technology.  While the price of oil continues to go up, advances in technology are bringing the price of alternative fuels down.  Years of investment in fuels like ethanol have put us on the threshold of major breakthroughs.  With a bold investment in alternative energy technologies, we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

* Increasing Our Use Of Ethanol.

* Ethanol Has Tremendous Potential For Growth As An Alternative To Gasoline.  Any vehicle on the road can run on a fuel blend that includes 10 percent ethanol.  And with minor modifications, cars and trucks can become "flex fuel vehicles" that run on a fuel blend called E85 – a mix of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.  About 40 percent of America's gasoline now includes some amount of ethanol – and that number is going to keep growing in the years ahead.

* Ethanol Is A Versatile Fuel Delivering A Wide Variety Of Benefits.  Ethanol is good for farmers because it provides a new market for their products.  Ethanol is good for rural communities because new biorefinery construction creates jobs and local tax revenue.  Ethanol is good for the environment because it burns cleaner than gasoline and produces less air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.  Ethanol is good for drivers because it replaces gasoline consumption.  And ethanol is good for our whole Nation because every time we use homegrown ethanol, we support American farmers and refiners – not foreign oil producers.

*  The Ethanol Industry Is Booming.  Last year, America used a record 4 billion gallons of ethanol – more than double the level when the President took office.  There are now 97 ethanol refineries in our country.  Nine of those are expanding, and 35 more are under construction.

*   President Bush Has Supported Ethanol More Strongly Than Any President Before Him.  Since the President took office, we have extended the 51-cent-per-gallon tax credit for ethanol suppliers; created a new 10-cent-per-gallon tax credit to provide extra help to small ethanol producers and farmers; provided about $85 million in loans or grants for ethanol business ventures; and signed into law a Renewable Fuels Standard that will nearly double the amount of ethanol in our fuel supply over the next six years.

*  Promoting Other Alternatives To Regular Gasoline.

*  Researchers Are Pioneering Ways To Make A New Form Of "Cellulosic Ethanol" From Natural Materials Like Wood Chips, Stalks, And Switch Grass.  The President has proposed $150 million in next year's budget for research into advanced forms of ethanol – a 65-percent increase over current levels.  Our goal is to make cellulosic ethanol affordable within six years – and allow millions more drivers to put ethanol in the tank.

*   Biodiesel Fuel Can Substitute For Regular Diesel In Cars, Trucks, Buses, And Farm Equipment.  Like ethanol, biodiesel is renewable, fully domestic, and a good way to support farmers and the rural economy.  The President signed into law the first-ever Federal tax credit for biodiesel producers.  Biodiesel refiners now receive 50 cents for every gallon of biodiesel they blend.

*   Engineers Are Designing A New Type Of "Plug-In Hybrid" That Can Be Recharged Through A Standard Electrical Outlet.  These hybrids will have fully charged batteries as soon as you start the car, which will allow them to travel much farther on electricity alone.  Plug-in hybrids could make it possible to drive 40 miles on electricity alone – and that means millions of Americans could make their daily commute without a drop of gasoline.  The President's budget for next year provides $31 million to speed up research into advanced battery technologies – a 27-percent increase over current levels.

*   Since 2003, The Administration Has Made Hydrogen And Fuel Cell Technology A High Priority.  When hydrogen is used in a device called a fuel cell, it can deliver enough electricity to power a car that emits pure water instead of exhaust fumes.  The Administration has dedicated $1.2 billion over five years to the research and development needed to get hydrogen cars into the showroom.

Unfortunate but necessary response...

I almost hate to waste any time on the silliness, but I feel I have to.  I’ll try and be short and to the point….I have fundraising, press and political tasks to take care of.

First, there is no restriction on me endorsing a candidate, nor are there any restriction on any other state committee member or county chair doing so. It’s part of our process. My two fellow national committee members from Michigan endorse candidates all the time. But, I have chosen NOT to endorse any candidate in the race for United States Senate.

Second, both Mike Bouchard and Keith Butler supported my campaign for state chair.  I’m insulted by the innuendo that somehow my comments or observations let alone endorsement can be bought.  Jerry and his handlers are barking up the wrong tree and doing nothing more than hurting the party by this distraction and foolishness.

I am asked from time to time about how the race is going.  I think it’s important that I  be honest and share my perspective in order to have credibility with the press, activists and opinion leaders.  I have gone out of my way to attempt to include all the candidates in all the things that we do and say about the various races.  Try as I might, I cannot control how a story is written. Here is an example of a story that appeared in a recent MIRS Lansing Newsletter and is the root cause of Jerry Zandstra's public tirade this morning (note what is actually quoted versus what the reporter infers):

Anuzis declined to go into the individual candidates' particular situations, but told MIRS in an interview this week that Bouchard is the strongest candidate based on his finances, his position in the polls and his geographic position as an Oakland County Republican.

"As of today, given the question, (Bouchard) is probably the leading candidate," Anuzis said.

The entire MIRS article and the Zandstra press release are included below.

As the campaign evolves, certain candidates start to emerge as “leading” candidates at any “given point and time”.  Polls  change, fundraising changes and political operations grow or diminish.  People can look at the facts today and judge for themselves who is viable and who is not. I go out of my way to promote our candidates, never disparaging those who are trying.

I know Jerry is new to the process - which is something that I admire and our Party welcomes - but his handlers know better….or maybe they don’t.  Sorry for having to waste your time.

Sincerely,

Saul Anuzis
Chairman
