Stabenow Chooses Pork Barrel Politics Over Protecting Social Security
Stabenow shows her populist rhetoric in Michigan doesn’t match her actions in Washington.
Lansing, MI -- U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) recently cast one of the deciding votes against a measure prohibiting Congress from spending the Social Security surplus on anything but retirees, deciding instead to side with Washington power brokers over Michigan’s working families and seniors.
“I can’t say we are surprised by Senator Stabenow’s vote,” Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saulius “Saul” Anuzis said. “Debbie Stabenow is the populist choice when she bothers to come back to Michigan but a darling to the special interest power brokers in Washington who want free rein to spend every last dime of the taxpayers’ money.”
Last week, U.S. Senators Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) introduced legislation to protect the Social Security surplus from being spent on pork barrel projects. Stabenow was one the deciding votes in the measure’s 53-46 defeat on the Senate floor. (S. CON. RES. 83, CQ Vote #68)
“The Social Security surplus is for American’s seniors, not Washington special interests, Anuzis said. “Debbie Stabenow had a chance to lock that surplus away is couldn’t be spend on pork barrel projects, and she didn’t do it. Michigan families and seniors deserve a better senator who will work for them, not the power brokers in Washington.”
